Epictetus

Epictetus (55 CE to 135 CE) is the Stoic philosopher I have appreciated reading the most. You can read about his life at New World Encyclopedia. I have enjoyed reading an interpretation of Epictetus’ work by Sharon Lebell titled “The Art of Living“. It is a paraphrase so a purist may not appreciate it, but I have enjoyed reading it.

A good and practical introduction to living a Stoic life is  “A Guide to the Good Life” by William B. Irvine. A short introduction to Naturalism is “Encountering Naturalism:A worldview and It’s Uses” by Thomas Clark. A more complete philosophical approach to Naturalism  is “Sense and Goodness Without God:A Defense of Metyphysical Naturalism” by Richard Carrier.

While my sympathies are with Naturalism, a Stoic philosophy can be applied to many other religious views like Christianity and Pantheism.

This blog is about living a Stoic life within a naturalist worldview. There are many good themes and discussions in our modern times that can be applied to living a Stoic life. Themes like minimalism, simplicity, a life of reason, trying to harmonize one’s life in the natural world, an appreciation of the scientific method, dealing with stress, etc… All of these themes and more  fit within a Stoic view of the world.  I will be talking about these themes and more on this blog. I will also be pointing others to various books, websites and articles that apply to living a Stoic life.

I am a husband and father of three. I homeschool my children and coach their sports teams. So I will also be sharing some real life experiences as it relates to trying to apply a Stoic philosophy to family life.
